Abstract

Local development concerns positive changes occurring in commune, poviats. The important factor, which influences the dynamics of local development is the activity of social community that may express itself in the form of a practical and creative solution of problems concerning the inhabited territory. Social activity is at the same time one of measurements of social capital within the local communitv. In respect of above considerations, a concept of a doctoral dissertation entitled "Social capital as a local development factor" was created. The main purpose of the dissertation was to identify relations between local social capital and local development. Determination of such a relation required to study specialist reference books and to conduct direct field research. The purpose of such research in the said dissertation was to identify and measure the influence of local community activity on local development. It was assumed that the measurement of such an activity is the implementation of economic, social and spatial projects by " third sector" local institutions in investigated communes of the eastern part of Lower Silesian Forests under Leader Community Initiative. The following main hypothesis was verified: "Social activity being a manifestation of local social capital is a significant local development factor nowadays". The main conclusion, which comes from research is the statement which says that local communities activity being the evidence of local social capital, is nowadays the important factor of local development.
