European Regional Development Fund as a source of financing regional cohesion policy of the European Union

Abstract

The Structural Funds (including the European Regional Development Fund) and the Cohesion Fund are the main instruments of EU regional policy. The aim of regional policy is to support sustainable economic growth throughout the European Union - • through actions aimed at equalizing disparities between countries and regions. The aim of this study is to identify and measure the different level of development of regions in Poland against EU regions NUTS 2 level based on selected socio-economic factors and the evaluation of the impact of ERDF funding as the instrument of regional cohesion policy of the European Union in the Polish regions with particular emphasis on the region of Lower Silesia. Achieving of the primary objective of the proposed doctoral dissertation is determined by rearrangement and settlement of specific issues, which include: • identification and level of differentiation of regional development in particular regions in Poland in NUTS 2 regions of the European Union • Identification of the scale and structure of the use of the European Regional Development Fund in various regions of Polish, • assessment of the role and impact of the use of funds from the European Regional Development Fund for the development of Lower Silesia. In connection with the defined scope of the research to verify the following main research hypothesis were adopted: Funds from the European Regional Development Fund constituting an important source of funding for regional development, contribute to improving the health of the economy of Lower Silesia
