Strategies of national oil companies in the global upstream petroleum sector

Tomasz Mikulski

Abstract

In the dissertation the author focuses on two critical questions: how biggest oil corporations formulate and follow their strategies in terms of their presence in the upstream sector and how they perform inside the upstream sector to gain competitive advantage over their rivals. In the thesis the positioning school of strategy is assumed as the most appropriate approach in order to examine petroleum industry and its upstream sector. The sector was analyzed using Michael Porter’s models: national diamond, five forces analysis and strategic group maps. The author used observation techniques, desk research as well as case studies of the most influential oil players in order to identify actual and possible strategies both on corporation and business level. Due to financial parameters of the upstream sector and its global scope aggresive and development strategies are recommended for national oil companies. The author underlines importance of relationship strategies between these entities and governments of their origin. Thus, the group of leading national oil companies represent strong and effective enterprises with high potential of profitability, gaining competitive advantage due to close relationship with governments and local societies.
