Entrepreneurial Orientation and Value Creation: Towards A Micro-Foundational Perspective

Abstract

Purpose and research questions. The aim of the paper is to initiate the research on a microfoundational perspective within the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and value creation. The aim has been realized by answering the following research question: How might the microfoundations concept in strategic management develop the understanding of the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and value creation? Design/Methodology/Approach. The method that has been used is a systematic and critical literature review of the following concepts: entrepreneurial orientation and value creation, micro-foundations of value creation. Moreover, a critical literature review on the micro-foundations concept has been made as well. Findings. The overarching findings are as follows. First, the micro-foundational perspective constitutes a promising research direction in examining the linkages between entrepreneurial orientation and value creation. Second, the value creation (both internal – for a company itself regarding performance, competitive advantage, etc. and external – for stakeholders) is determined by entrepreneurial orientation at both the organizational level (including higher and lower order dimensions) (the Coleman’s relation no. 4) and the individual one. Moreover, organizational entrepreneurial orientation determines individual-level entrepreneurial orientation antecedents (the Coleman’s relation no. 1). In turn, individual-level entrepreneurial orientation is determined by individual-level entrepreneurial orientation antecedents such as, for instance, managerial cognitions. cognitive dynamic capabilities, emotions, particular values and interests, entrepreneurial proclivity, alertness, high locus of control and opened world view (the Coleman’s relation no. 2). Finally, individual-level entrepreneurial orientation determines organizational value creation (the Coleman’s relation no. 3). Research implications. The findings fill the research gap in the strategic management field concerning a micro-foundational perspective of examining the entrepreneurial orientation-based value creation concept.
