Internationalization of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMES) in ASEAN
AbstractMicro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) account for mass shares of employment and GDP of the ASEAN region , involving , to date, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. MSMEs play an important role in the regional production networks established by the multinational enterprises (MNEs), serving as subcontractors and suppliers of various inputs to value chain. MSMEs originated in ASEAN tend to internationalize through, among others, direct/indirect exports, licensing, franchisings, and contract manufacturing with MNEs. The main objective of the article is to indicate the role of MSMEs in the ASEAN region , that established economic community in the end of 2015 with a single market and production base, major drivers of MSMEs’ internationali zation, as well as challenges to MSMEs’ internationalization.
