Field-tested methods of measuring increased worker productivity after occupational health interventions

Abstract

There are only few studies on occupational health psychology interventions (OHPIs) in organizations in which the impact of the OHPI on increased worker productivity has been adequately measured. It is also hard to find well-delimited productivity indicators in the descriptions of the interventions. The main aim of this paper is to identify and define productivity indicators in order to be able to assess the effects of an OHPI underway in a Polish extractive company struggling with work accidents and lower productivity. Firstly, a comparison is conducted of different productivity indicators applied in 11 OHPIs (with confirmed increases in productivity) described in the literature. This is then applied to a case study of the extractive company in which an work-related stress intervention is in progress. On the basis of the analysis of literature on workers’ productivity and field-tested programs, 11 productivity indicators were obtained, analyzed and evaluated in terms of their usefulness regarding the character of the company and the main goals of the intervention in the studied case. Out of these indicators, three were chosen, and one of them was slightly modified to be used to measure the prospective rise in employees’ productivity after the completion of the intervention.
