The export of apples from Poland in the context of international economic cooperation
AbstractOver the past 20 years, apple production in Poland has doubled on average from 1.6 to 3.2 million tons. Poland is the only country in the European Union with a tendency to grow apples. The current production potential of apple orchards is up to 4.5 million tonnes. The position of Poland in global exports is also growing. Currently we export about 1.0 million tons. Many factors contributed to the success in production and export. Price advantage and properties of apples were used. Apples have a very positive effect on the health of people, including those with diabetes or obesity. The orchard production is exposed to diseases and pests. It is implemented in two systems: integrated production and integrated plant protection. The first system allows to minimize the use of synthetic plant protection products and safe storage of fetuses. The second system implies the use of plant protection products and other forms of intervention at economically and ecologically justified levels to reduce or minimize risks to human health and the environment. Food safety in Poland is supervised by the State Sanitary Inspection (SSI, common name: sanepid) and the State Plant Health and Seed Inspection (SPHaSI). SSI is a specialized body that performs public health tasks, which are responsible for offi-cial controls and monitoring of non-animal food produced and marketed. The tasks pursued by SPHaSI aim to reduce the risk from harmful organisms, eliminate the negative effects of trade and use of plant protection products, and supervise seed production fully meeting the health and quality requirements. Exported apples are subject to phytosanitary control (surveillance) of the quarantine at the border. All activities undertaken by exporters and state-owned institutions contribute to ensuring that Polish apples are healthy for humans
